France calls for an extension of EU monitoring mission along Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan

Azatutyun. am reports that France has called for an extension of a two-month monitoring mission launched by the European Union along Armenia’s volatile border with Azerbaijan in October.

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna declared that the 40 or so civilian monitors deployed by the EU to the Armenian side of the border have “really limited the risk of escalation.”

He told the French Parliament:
“This presence should continue as long as it is needed.” “This is our belief. This is also … the desire of the Armenians.”

Meanwhile, News.am highlights comments by German ECR MEP Lars Patrick Berg on the situation in Armenia, following a visit to the country. He warns:

“The European Commission’s natural gas deal with Azerbaijan broke great trust that existed in Armenia”.

He thereby adds: “The EU should become more active. The European Commission’s [natural] gas deal with Azerbaijan has broken the great trust that existed in Armenia before that,”

Dutch MEP Peter van Dalen reportedly shares the same opinion, stating: “I believe the gas deal with Azerbaijan is a big mistake”. MEP Fabio Massimo Castaldo called for increased EU efforts to resolve the Karabakh conflict through diplomatic means.
