The Italian government of Giorgia Meloni could be ready to support Slovak PM Robert Fico in his plan to resume Russian gas transit through Ukraine. This is what Italian academic Fransceco Sassi reports.
Energy has been at the center of the Slovak diplomatic mission to Rome, and the visit appears to have been successful. According to Denisa Saková, Slovakia now has “a strong ally” in Italy in its attempt to resume Russian gas transit through Ukraine.
Last week, a delegation from the Slovak Republic visited Rome to meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The Slovak diplomatic mission was led by President Peter Pellegrini, a successor of Robert Fico and an ally of the current Prime Minister. The delegation also included Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Saková, a key figure in Fico’s government who is heavily involved in negotiations to resume the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine. The flow of Russian gas stopped after decades on January 1, 2025.

“If you are confused after these few lines and the question marks pile up in your head, well, just so you know, you are in good company. Let’s try to clear your thoughts and disentangle this crucial turning point in gas geopolitics.
Last week, a delegation from the Slovak Republic visited Rome to meet with the Italian President Sergio Mattarella and the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The Slovak diplomatic mission was led by President Peter Pellegrini (with Italian ancestors), a successor of Robert Fico in his position and an ally of the current PM. The embassy also included the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Saková, a very relevant figure in Fico’s government and heavily involved in negotiations to resume the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine which stopped, after many decades, on January 1, 2025.

🇪🇺🇺🇦 Ukraine not extend the agreement with russia for gas transit, which expires on January 1, 2025. This marks the end project for the transit of russian gas to Europe, dating back to soviet times. 👏 pic.twitter.com/Hz4ugD2nCp
