Iran detains two Europeans during visit of EU envoy

By Pieter Cleppe

ABC News reports that Iran has detained two Europeans, just before the EU coordinator of the Iran nuclear talks, Enrique Mora, once again met Iran’s nuclear negotiator in Tehran, over last-ditch attempts to revive the JCPOA Iran nuclear deal.

The Iranian regime has refused to provide a lot of details on the detained Europeans, merely disclosing they share the same nationality, which was not identified. According to Tehran, they were trying to “take advantage” of protests in Iran which involved workers and teachers demanding better salaries.

Commenting on the issue, Wall Street Journal journalist Laurence Norman states:

“I am pretty sure there will be questions on why EU team stayed in Tehran to discuss JCPOA rescue while Iran announces new “arrests” of Europeans. Getting up and leaving or staying put both send signals.”

The Iran nuclear talks have stalled since mid March.

In the European Parliament, German MEP Lars Patrick Berg met with members of the Iranian opposition, stating:

“It was an eye opener to learn about the diresome situation of the Iranian people, especially the Iranian women.”
