Trump Says Putin Agreed to One-Week Pause on Attacks on Kyiv and Other Cities

US President Donald Trump said on January 29 that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to a request to refrain from attacking Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities and villages for a period of one week.

Speaking at a press conference, Trump stated that he had personally asked Putin not to carry out attacks during the period, citing extremely low temperatures currently affecting Ukraine. According to Trump, the Russian president agreed to the request.

“I personally asked President Putin not to fire on Kyiv and the cities and villages for a week,” Trump said. “And he agreed to do that.”

Trump did not specify when or how the request was communicated to Putin, nor did he clarify the exact start date of the proposed pause in attacks.

The statement comes amid ongoing military activity in Ukraine. Russian forces carried out an overnight attack on Kyiv on January 28, continuing a campaign that has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during the winter period.

Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian forces launched more than 100 drones across Ukraine overnight on January 29. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 18 strikes were recorded in various regions.

Trump’s remarks also follow unconfirmed reports suggesting that Kyiv and Moscow may have discussed a temporary pause in attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. Neither Ukraine nor Russia has officially confirmed such an agreement, and Moscow has not publicly commented on Trump’s statement.
